Sounds like he may have been injured somehow. I would take him to an avian veterinarian.
I’ve had a princess of wales parrot and two budgies for nearly three months and they still bounce around in the cage like ping pong balls when I get close to them. (except the parrot) I’m trying to get them to perch on my hand when I place it next to them. How do I do that? Also, how can I tell that I can take all of the birds out of the cage without letting them fly away?
We have a 3 yr old Quaker parrot that walks freely around that house.
I came home and found feathers under the kitchen table than I noticed he wasn’t talking to me like he usually does as soon I as come in the door. I than noticed his right wing was a little lower and he was putting No pressur on his right foot.
It’s been 2 days now and there has been no change.
Any advice on what I should do, or what it might me?? Should I take his to a vet?
I have a cockatiel who has been on an all seed diet. How do i get him to start eating pellets instead?
What has worked for you?
Just keep offering but your bird may never take to pellets. I have an amazon & a large macaw that I tried for years to get on Harrison’s. After about 10 years they started eating it & this was after another bird that loved pellets came to live here. Seeds are a fine diet for cockatiels. Cracking seed hulls is a way to keep the hook-bill beak in shape. In fact (this is kinda funny) read the ingredients list on the pellet package—it’s all seeds/grains so I’ve always wondered why people are so crazy about getting their birds off seeds & onto pellets. Yes, pellets can add other nutrients that seeds don’t offer but your bird is better off getting fresh foods. Never try to force your bird to eat pellets by removing all seed or other foods. Starving is very cruel and seldom works. A variety of foods that can include pellets is best. Bon appétit, y’all
Teaching a parrot to perch, means teaching the parrot to trust you first.Treats do help with the process. If he is not afraid of your hand.If this is the case,,teaching him to perch on a hand held perch, not normally in the cage, is the first step.A parrot will use his beak to see if something is safe before he steps onto it.He may even bite it first. This is very normal. It takes alot of daily practice. You need to gently put the stick(extra perch) up to his chest area if he will stand still.apply small amount of pressure,,but do not push him over backwards. They will step onto the stick, to keep their balance. When at this level,,repeat over and over for days.Do not try to remove him from his cage until he seems comfortable doing this.Once again,,it can be a long process, but eventually your hand is replaced by the stick. And remember he will test your hand for stability before standing on it.
I have heard that most parrots peck their feathers off their stomachs.
I have seen & heard that you can buy a lotion to stop the pecking, but are there any other solutions to stop the pecking?
I love my parrot & I hate to see him peck his feathers. He doesn’t peck all his feathers just his lil tummy feathers & some from his neck.
Please help!
While I have never had a bird that plucked its feathers, a friend of mine gave her 8-year-old child a quaker parrot and within a year it was plucking its feathers. They called the vet and found out it was because his cage wasn’t clean. I don’t know if this is your bird’s problem, but maybe it might help. Lotions, if any, HAVE to be vet-prescribed, along with any other methods. Buildups of fecal matter can be invitations for many kinds of diseases, some of them lethal. So maybe try cleaning his cage once a week. Hope this helps!
I have a 4 year old female Blue Fronted Amazon parrot. I used to let her out of her cage to play for about 2 hours a day. We just got a new puppy, and in lieu of locking him up all that time, I have cut my parrot’s freetime down to 1 hour a day. Is this going to hurt her?
At the very least, she will be upset with you. If she has bonded to you, she will likely show signs of jealousy that can lead to screaming, plucking or other undesirable behaviors.
Also, your amazon really needs more than one hour out of the cage each day. Granted, some days you might not be able to let her out for very long, but do try to let her out as much as possible. My babies are out of the cage whenever someone is home and awake.
Birds and dogs can co-exist in the same house, just never leave them together unsupervised. My daughter recently brought home a rat terrier/brittany spaniel mixed puppy. The only change I had to make was to raise one of my macaw’s perches a few inches. The puppy thinks those beautiful long tail feathers should be toys.
You can also put them in seperate rooms and get a children’s safety gate to keep the puppy out without totally closing your bird off to family activities.
I got a parrot about a few months ago and my dad named it Bob. I still don’t know if my parrot is a boy or a girl. My parents couldn’t tell either.
Go to your vet and bring a tail feather. For about $15 they can test its DNA and tell you.
I would like to know what kind of parrot/bird is the easiest to breed? I know that parakeets are easy and finches are, but I’m looking for someone like cockatiel and birds like them.
Also I would like to know what kind of birds are aggressive and which are not aggressive. I know that lovebirds are aggressive.
So please if you know the True answer for my questions please answer.
Thanks a lot.
The best way to get this kind of information is to contact breeders. They would have the most reliable info. Some people have better results with some types of birds while others do not. You’ve got to have the right equipment, housing, foods and of course your breeding birds. Sometimes breeders will sell a bonded pair of birds. You’ll have to consider the amount of space you can devote to a breeding operation including the size of the birds themselves. Of course the bigger the bird the more space you’ll need. Have you ever had Parrots before? Are you familiar with their care? And needs? They can be very expensive too. One more thing – Parrots can be very noisy & loud depending on the breed of bird. Can your fellow housemates and you deal with the noise? Oh & they can be very messy pets too.
As far as which birds are aggressive- that depends a lot on the bird. How were they raised, were the captive bred? Hand Fed, given a lot of attention and handling? Any bird can be aggressive just like people. I’ve known people with the sweetest Lovebirds but I’ve also known them to be nippy. It all depends on how they’re raised etc.
Before getting into anything involving pets you should really do a lot of research on the subjects. Not just on breeding but Parrots in general, their care & maintenance etc. Never buy Wild Caught birds no matter how cheap they are! Always buy Captive Bred birds. I can’t emphasize enough about doing your research. Be careful of the info out there too. There’s a lot of “Mis-Information” out there so use common sense when learning. A very good source is Sally Blanchard, she’s a Parrot Behaviorist. She, in my opinion, is one of the best sources of good information all about Parrots. She’s written a few books and has a quarterly magazine called Companion Parrot Quarterly (www.companionparrot.com). Check her out & good luck. Don’t forget to do your research!
Im a kid, and im currently in pursuit of trying to convince my parents to buy me a pet. I failed epiclly on trying to get a puppy or kitten. So I would like to settle for a parrot. They are easier to maintain, and just so majestic(: so how much would a medium sized parrot cost?
oh my god, your EXACTLY like me. my dad told me to get a parrot because he likes them, and i do too. but i thought, no way could i get £300 quickly. so now i’m currently looking up things on cockatiels. cheaper, but still brilliant. i think you should get a cockatiel.
just my opinion.
so probably the cost of a parrot is about… £100 up to i think £500
: )
good luck
My parrot never stops squarwking and it’s really loud. I want to train her to say more words too.
It’s quite exotic, an Eclectus (not sure of correct spelling). It generally squawks just to get attention – when someone walks away from it or at meal times
If she is making noise for attention the first thing you need to do is pay a lot of attention to her when she is being quiet. If you do that often enough she won’t feel the need for attention seeking behavior. When she is making the noise you don’t want her to make you have to ignore her.Any reaction at all on your part will only re-enforce the negative behavior and make her more likely to repeat it. There are certain family activities that birds want to take part in, and meal time is one of them. You should try including her in the meal time routine. Get her a free-standing perch and let her eat with you. This is also a good way to get birds to try new foods.
Make sure she has plenty of toys and things to keep her busy when she is alone, and be sure to rotate toys frequently cause they really do get bored with the same old toys after a while. When she is playing with her toys quietly tell her she’s a good bird, let her know that that’s the behavior you want.
A steady routine will also help, if she knows that you will come back, and knows how long to expect to be alone she won’t mind it so much.
I’ve had my parrot fish for one year in a 20 gallon tank. It is all alone, I havn’t been able to find a fish that is compatable with it. My pet stores are very limited. Anyway, there apears to be at least 100 or more of eggs in the corner of the tank. I really need to know what these are?!
